  1. Hope you don't mind me asking, what exactly is your career? I see that you are a coach/trainer but was wondering at what level. I too am looking to enter the fitness/physical therapy field and was wondering if you had any recommendations as far as where I can learn about which certifications are best.

  2. Currently I am employed by a private health & fitness center as a manager/exercise specialist as they term it. I oversee the personal training and massage therapy programs; while doing the other typical things you might expect such as orientations, developing programming for members, and obviously training clients myself. It's a lot of desk work and very monotonous.

Prior to that I was an assistant strength coach at the D-I level for a year.

Which certs are best? That is a very loaded question. It depends on what you interests are.

    If it's strength and conditioning:

    -CSCS through the NSCA
    -SCCC through the CSCCA

    If it's just personal training:

    - CPT though the NSCA
    - ACSM
    - ACE

Both can be augmented by certs like:

    - CISSN (nutrition)
    - USA Weightlifting (olympic lifts)
    - RKC or HKC (kettlebells)
    - FMS - Functional Movement Screen

If it's physical therapy you generally need a degree and a license for your state.

But frankly - certs are just the beginning...they simply illustrate you at least have some BASIC knowledge of physiology etc. The key is continuing ed. Networking, mentoring, reading(LOTS!), DVD's conferences. Otherwise you are going to be behind.

Personally I don't care much for the health club scene, and would like to get back to coaching - if I don't find a way to get more involved with diabetes with research etc. I just loved the atmosphere and the relationships you form with all of your student-athletes - just very rewarding. I think high school strength coach is something that is going to take off in the near future.

I currently have a CSCS and FMS cert, and will be adding an HKC cert in a couple months. Debating on the USA Weightlifting cert. Luckily my workplace supports continuing ed so I can generally get some - if not all - of the cost covered if I space them out right. I have tentative plans to attend 2 conferences by the end of June as well.
