RIP HED and Today's Numbers....

Morning Temp: 97.5
Glucose: 213
Weight: 194.5
BF %: 14.5 (bioimpedance)

Well, after not seeing any improvement in glucose numbers over the past 2 weeks; and seeing more and more evidence I am behaving closer to Type I than Type II Diabetes....I have decided to bag the HED experiment. Unfortunate, because I truly believe it would be helpful for someone who is insulin resistant; but it appears that is not the case with me....

Still quite frustrated with being able to eat ~250-300g of carbohydrates and more often than not have better numbers(though still terrible overall) than when ingesting 150-200g; but I am thinking the size of servings may be at least partially responsible. I will look to ingest no more than 25-30g at a time and see what happens.

I was able to add ~ 10 pounds of body weight and .2-.3 of a point in body temp. Bodyfat percentage only increased 1%.

I will be adopting a fairly high fat intake(%70-80%), and will fill in the rest approximately equally between carb and protein as I move forward.

And heeeeerrreee we go...

Today's Numbers.....

Temp: 97.5
Glucose: 207

Due to the two 140ish point spikes after training I have decided not to train for the rest of the month. It will give me the opportunity to concentrate on my flexibility and mobility which I have severely neglected.

Meal #1

- 5 sausage patties
- 5 units novalin

1 Hour: 142
2 1/2 Hour: 101(body is so out of whack I actually felt hypo at this level)

Hypo feeling dissipated within 15-20 min. Hopefully it wasn't glucagon!

Meal #2

- 6 thin slices proscuitto
- 1 piece Ezekial Bread
- 12 oz. pan fried potatoes(olive oil)
- 3 Tablespoons olive oil
- 8 oz. green beans
- 1/4 cup coconut milk

- 1 Tablespoon garlic
- 2 oz. onion
- 500mg metformin

1 Hour: 270
2 Hour: 352 (really?!)

Meal #3

- 3 cups long grain brown rice
- 12 oz broccoli
- 3 Tablespoons butter
- 4 coleman hotdogs
- tsp. tumeric
- 5 units novalin-r

1 Hour: 383
2 Hour: 385

Meal #4

- 12 slices coleman uncured/nitrate/msg free bacon
- 15 large asparagus spears
- 2 pieces Ezekial Cinn/Raisin Bread
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 2 pats butter
- 500mg metformin

1 Hour: 439(10 units lantus)
2 Hour: 493
3 Hour: 446

* Apparently I don't handle brown rice well; or I ate way too much. Odd I don't even feel thirsty. The only other change was these meals were placed 1-2 hours closer together than yesterday. These represent the worst readings I have had in 2 weeks; the only thing that produced worse results than this was a trip to the chinese buffet about 3 weeks ago. Back to the drawing board......

Today's Numbers...

Temp: 97.5
Glucose: 236

So not much difference(-8 pts.) in fasted levels this morning after my little experiment yesterday, despite eating esssentially the exact same meals. The only notable differences, if at all, is that there was a 3 hour window before last night's meal in question yesterday; as opposed to 2 hours the day before. I got a little less sleep last night as well, but only about an hour. I also did not have the 1 oz serving of milk chocolate with the meal either; I finished the last piece the day before.

Comparing the response to the meal itself as compared to the last prior post-prandial readings:

- 144 point spike when training as compared to 64 point spike when not training.

Meal #1:

- 5 sausage patties
- 5 units novalin

1 Hour: 247 (strange that it goes up today?)
2 Hour: 219

Meal #2(immediately followed by ~30 min. training session)

- 4 oz. marinated chicken breast
- 1 large baked potatoe
- 10 large asparagus spears
- 3 pats butter
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil

1 Hour: 368(another 140ish point spike post workout)
2 Hour: 315

A few observations after this meal:

  • still hungry or experiencing cravings
  • unrination seemed to increase substantially even considering the raised glucose levels
  • cheeks are flush

I have noticed on occasion the past few weeks my ears were a bit flush after some meals as well.

Due to not realizing I didn't bring enough strips with me to work; I decided to make this next meal a doozy to hold me over until I get home...

Meal #3

- 4 oz rotisserie chicken

- 2 pieces Ezekial Cinn/Raisin Bread

- 8 oz green beans

- 1 large baked potatoe

- ~16 oz baked red potatoes

- 5 pats butter

- 2 oz salad mix

- 4 tomtatoe wedges

- 1 Tablespoon olive oil

- 1 Tablespoon Basalmic Vinegar

- 5 units novalin-r

1 Hour: 238 (interesting again; definately flush in the face and ears again; and feeling quite warm overall; was expecting it to be higher but I will take it for now)

2 Hour: 300 (now that's more like it! Note: sarcasm. Even still, both of these readings are lower than for the previous meal; even though I ingested double the calories here.)

Random Test 5 Hours Later: 300

Meal #4

- 2 pieces Ezekial Cinn/Raisin Bread

- 2 pats butter

- 18 large asparagus spears

- 1 Tablespoon olive oil

- 1 1/2 cups coconut milk

Today's Numbers...

Temp: 97.6
Glucose: 244

* the large spike after my last meal yesterday and lack of drop in fasting glucose today despite lowering carb intake by 120g both most likely further illlustrate that:

  • things are much more complicated than carbs=insulin=insulin resistance
  • we may need to get fit to exercise as opposed to exercise to get fit

I'm going to try and eat as identical to yesterday as I can with no training and see what happens....

Today's Numbers....

Morning Temp: 97.7

Fasting Glucose: 242

Not a good score overall obviously; but considering how much I ate yesterday maybe not so bad? Granted I used insulin, but that score is still approximately 50 points lower than when I was not using insulin and ingesting about a 1/4 of what I did yesterday in terms of total calories on occasion and carbohydrates consistently. Let's see what the day brings....

Lab Results(incomplete).....UPDATED

* Updated with the set of labs from May of 2009. Have to do some digging for the previous 2; though I can tell you the second of those would be picture perfect as is correlates to the time frame where I was under control sans medication. The other lab immediately followed my initial discovery of my blood sugar issues, and would be fairly poor. I remember my fasting glucose was 300 or so(303?); and triglycerides I recall being very high as well. Will do my best to locate those for sake of further comparison.

*Interesting to note the AST and ALT numbers were the best on what otherwise is one of my worst labs to date.

The nurse just ran out my labs for me, but they are incomplete as far as I can tell. This isn't the usual print out I get, but I don't see T3, T4, and most importantly insulin on here. I will have to touch base and get some clarification. I just have the last two rounds of labs on me to compare for now.

1.4.10/11.9.09/5.8.09
Glucose: 246/305/299

Blood Urea Nit.: 21/31/24

Cholesterol: 322/333/227

HDL: 64/51/56

LDL: 238/229/150

Ratio: 5/6.5 /4.1

Triglyceride: 102/263/106
A1C: 12%/11.3%/9.9%

Aspartate Amin(AST): 48/21/68

Alanine Amino (ALT): 76/33/160
Cortisol: 17.7/-

TSH: 1.29/-

I'll report my observations later today; feel free to chime in.

A couple quick observations:

  • was interesting to see A1C got worse(despite eating fewer and fewer carbs), yet triglycerides improved dramatically; and cholesterol improved at least in ratio.
  • hepatic function worse as seen by the increase of AST and ALT; not sure if decreasing protein intake will have any effect on this? or the decrease in exercise intensity/volume?
  • TSH seems on the low side; will have to investigate possible pituitary/adrenal issues. Not familiar with what a "good" blood cortisol level would be, will have to research.
  • Cortisol range is 5-23 according to WebMD, which would put me in mid-upper end of the range. Being that cortisol counteracts insulin, and that cortisol is typically highest in the morning and falls throughout the day; I may look to ingest fat/protein only meals at breakfast and concentrate carb intake in the mid-latter part of the day. Interesting to note that would be the opposite of the guidelines of nutrient timing I followed from Dr. John Berardi 3 years ago when I first had success in having control sans medicine. Considerations on timing of insulin injections and training times should also be evaluated in a similar manner. Manipulating circadian rhythm by adopting an early to bed/early to rise protocol may be of some interest as well. Obviously not a cure, but I also need to be a bit smarter and not run so high all the time so I can actually stay alive long enough to figure this all out!

A Few Observations and Today's Numbers...

Morning Temp: 97.3*

Fasting Glucose: 183*

* Due to Monday being an early work day, I only got about 5 hours of sleep compared to the usual 9 or so. I usually have my lowest readings monday mornings due to less time for gluconeogenesis to occur. Not sure what's up with the drop in temp.

Bodyweight was already up to 197 this morning; up approximately 13 lbs. from my lowest of 184ish within the past month. Up 8 lbs. in the last week since starting my sorry excuse version of HED. Bodyfat was only up 2% to 15.5 measured with bioimpedance. The weight increase is most likely a large reason why training yesterday felt so easy. Really easy. A welcome change after getting weaker and weaker over the past few months.

Some interesting observations....

  • The 183 this morning is only 22 points higher than the 161 from last monday(1/4) with the same sleep parameters despite....
  • last week(1/3) I took 15 units of novalin-r throughout the day as compared to only 10 yesterday.
  • Additionally on 1/3 I consumed at one time or another meals containing a pear, a handful of grapes, 1 metabolic drive bar and about 3 handfuls of chocolate covered raisins.
  • Overall, yesterday I ingested 130g more carbohydrates, 1200 more calories, and used 5 units less novalin-r as compared to 1 week ago; yet had a fasted reading the following morning only 22 points higher.
Just comparing the last 2 days....
  • total calories were about the same
  • ingested approximately 48g more carbohydrates on 1/10 as compared to 1/9
  • used 10 units of novalin-r on 1/10 as compared to 15 on 1/9
  • last 2 hour post-prandial reading of the day was 107 points lower on 1/10 as compared to 1/9 despite using less insulin and eating more carbohydrates
  • fasting level for the morning following 1/10 was 34 points lower than the morning following 1/9; again despite using less insulin and eating more carbohydrates
I ran into the Doc already this morning, and will be picking up my labs later today and posting the results here. He hinted they were pretty poor, which I was expecting. After a brief conversation, he is of the opinion I have more of an issue not producing enough insulin; as opposed to being resistant to it. If true it probably would not spell good news for the HED experiement, but time will tell. Odd to develop such a thing this late in life it would seem? Surely with all the athletics I played growing up had it been present earlier it would have manifested in some way? No family history either. Not the type of special I was going for!

OOPS! and Today's Numbers......

Being new to this insulin thing, I realized after I went to bed last night that the lantus pen I have been using was actually empty last night. So I did not inject 10 units of lantus last night, I simply impaled myself for no particular reason. Additionally, that means the night before I injected 10 units before bed, not 15. I will go back and edit the previous posts. I also only got around to using 5 units of novalin-r yesterday, while had been using 10-15 units throughout the day. With that out of they way....

Much hungrier today as I have already almost consumed as many calories in my first 2 meals today as I did all of yesterday. Felt full and satisfied after this meal unlike the first, should be awhile before I eat again today. Though I am obviously not thrilled with my glucose response thus far today. Especially breakfast, since it is essentially identical to yesterday's breakfast, yet caused a markedly worse response?? Nevertheless I will stay the course.

About 9 hours later......

Meal #3

Total Daily Calories: 2946 - 173g fat/106g carb/241g protein

I would typically go crazy only eating 3 meals, but today it didn't bother me at all. I didn't find myself with ravenous hunger during the large time between meals like I normally would. Though I have been trying this HED thing for about a week now and have already gained 3 pounds and lost .5-1% bodyfat; leaving me currently at 189lbs. and 13.5% bodyfat measured by bioimpedance. Overall feeling and energy levels are up, and bowel movements have returned to normal(YAY!). Though it's hard for me to determine how much of those things are contributed to soley by HED and not starting on insulin. Probably a little of both.

My averages over the previous week are:

Calories: 3700

  • Fat: 226g
  • Carb: 182g
  • Protein: 240g

Finally! The ROCK has come back........

Wait...wrong site. Sorry 'bout that.

But I AM back...back with renewed vigor in an effort to lay the proverbial smack down on diabetes. Why, you ask?

Well, after becoming thoroughly frustrated with the combined results(or lack thereof) of eating less than 100g carb's/day, taking 1000mg of metformin/day, and frequent exercise(SPIKING and not lowering blood sugar levels); I was obviously looking for solutions the modern medical community was simply not providing. New Year's Day my wishes came true as Matt Stone of 180 Degree Health finally released his 180 Degree Diabetes e-book. What a read! Great information and a highly recommended read not only to those effected and afflicted by diabetes; but anyone concerned and/or charged with improving the health of us homo sapiens. That means you medical community and health & fitness practitioners!

A lot of what Matt discusses and recommends goes against the grain; in fact in most cases it's the downright antithesis of current medical recommendations. But seeing as those current reccomendations are doing oh......... about nothing for me( or anyone else for that matter if the staggering increase in diabetes is any evidence); I'm more than ready to try something new. After all, one definition of insanity is repeating the same things over and again and expecting different results.

So I have slowly begun implementing a few of Matt's ideas like the High Everything Diet(HED). Now I say slowly as a still have a small amount of fruit around the house to finish(harmful effects of fructose). I also have had a hard time averaging over 3500kcal/day. I probably eat more protein than I should be as well; though I am not sure how large of an effect that would have(..Matt?). I also probably need to drop the 2 protein supplements I use from Biotest, the Low-Carb Metabolic Drive Protein Mix and Metabolic Drive Protein Bars. The only other recommendation I will have difficulty with is eliminating exercise. Weight training has been a large part of my life ever since my freshmen year of college(umm..Tupac Shakur was still alive and that's all I'm saying!); a large reduction in volume and frequency may have to do for now. I have been aware of the negative effects of long distance running and the like for some time now, and have already eliminated such activities years ago.

I will be charting my daily progress and experiences with this new regimen here for all to see and deconstruct in an effort to help all.

And so starts the very humble beginnings of this blog....
