Today's Numbers...

Temp: 97.6
Glucose: 244

* the large spike after my last meal yesterday and lack of drop in fasting glucose today despite lowering carb intake by 120g both most likely further illlustrate that:

  • things are much more complicated than carbs=insulin=insulin resistance
  • we may need to get fit to exercise as opposed to exercise to get fit

I'm going to try and eat as identical to yesterday as I can with no training and see what happens....

  1. Man, those numbers continue to be so erratic and unpredictable. Definitely lower mid-day without the training, but not enough to draw any big conclusions.

Any word yet on your fasting insulin levels? I still suspect that they are quite low - showing signs of pancreatic deficiency, which would be a different animal from type 2 and not a matter of insulin resistance as I mentioned. The telltale sign is really that no matter what you eat, your 2-hour tests are almost always higher than the 1-hour test. Me no likey.

  2. One way you might want to test this yourself is to eat all carbs for a few days - nothing but starch and vegetables with no added fat and no animal protein. If your glucose levels go up and continue to climb during the 2nd hour postmeal, I say there's no way you're producing adequate insulin - which would suggest a really, really low-carb diet for you paired with a heftier dose of insulin to keep levels in the 100-range.

  3. Let me first say I really appreciate you dropping by and offering your insights....

Yeah, that has been the most frustrating thing; there just seems to be no rhyme or reason to anything.

I'm finding it really difficult to get large amounts of calories in without my protein creeping up. Knowing that the excess is converted into glucose; and increased intake is known to increase gluconeogenesis...it's obviously not helping.

I assume you aren't seeing any foods I am eating that you have issue with? Besides the occasional protein bar anyway; those actually have more carbs in them than protein. Could be issues moreso with the sweetener they use, I will have to look at that.

No word yet on the insulin, I was hoping there would be a little more accessibility now that the Steelers didn't make the playoffs and he doesn't have all those additional duties; but it will probably not be until Mon. that I see him.

I've only been taking insulin for about 2 weeks now...I had drops before of over 100 points during the day; so I must at least be making some? But I have the same fears that I may be behaving moreso like Type I. Again, odd to develop such a thing so late? Looking at the fluctuations in hepatic function; I am starting to wonder if it is worth getting a few of those organs scanned for more serious issues as well.

Not a fan of the 2 hour readings either.

Really hoping not to have to go back to the low carb deal; maybe it's just the extra calories.....but I just feel SO much better after putting this weight back on. Energy levels, motivation, depression, habitual state of aggravation; all improved. It seems after looking closer not only was I going so low carb again; but in the process of being stricter that I was before I was indirectly going low calorie as well. If I have to go back, hopefully just adding more calories in some where it would keep those symptoms at bay.

  4. If you do go back to low-carb, just make sure it's almost all fat - like 70-80% of calories.

You can really see that your glucose never gets stored by watching your daily numbers. They just continue to build on each other, and build, and build. Sucks.

Amen to feeling better by eating well. It's amazing that you can feel as well as you do with blood sugar levels that high. I suppose that's worth something - even if it does make your condition worse. As the saying goes: it's not the years in your life but the life in your years. All things considered, mood is more important than anything else.

I have plenty of qualms about your food choices, but didn't want to nitpick. If I were you I'd try something very bland and repetitive and constant to get a really good feel for how it affects you. Big plates of brown rice with veggies sauteed in butter, salads with creamy (sour-cream based) homemade dressings, 2-3 ounces of meat/cheese and some canned coconut milk for dessert 3X per day would give you much more unrefined carbohydrate, optimal fats, and more reasonable amounts of protein.

  5. ...maybe I just felt that bad before and got used to it!

Though not sure I can say it makes the condition worse; granted I am taking more meds now but I haven't seen a number in the 100's mid-day like I did yesterday in at least 7 months.

Feel free to nitpick; I can take it. Your dish sounds less bland than what I have ate my whole life so... Though I will say it has also been nice to learn to "cook" the bit that I have; and eating potatoes and corn again has been nothing short of amazing.

  6. ..was also interesting to see your recommendations of brown rice and coconut milk are rich sources of maganese. Maganese seems the be the only main nutrient I am consistently severely lacking according to FitDay; and that's over the past couple weeks while I have been stuffing myself crazy and eating more vegtables etc. than I ever have; if you can believe that. My intake before must have been non-existent!
